He traces the origins of these perceptions of antagonism back to the Europe of Latin Christianity and the so-called Muslim world starting from the seventh century: ‘Europe formed its western identity first and foremost with the Islamic world as its “cultural” other. Dissenting for love: DISSENT and heresy are words with deeply troubling connotations. They are regarded as the epitome of betrayal, the harbinger of sedition in a community, associated with ‘dangerous thinkers’ and ideas that undermine the fragile minds of the youth. In most Muslim communities, these words are usually tinged with the satanic. In A Call for Heresy he makes it clear that both Americans and Muslims are ‘strait-jacketed’ by economic, political, social and religious ‘orthodoxies’. Clerics on the march: Lest we forget, the armies of the faithful – with their fearsome beards and shaven moustaches, shalwars pulled up over ankles – have never been in power in Pakistan (the MMA’s stint as Musharraf’s co-travellers in the Frontier not really counting in this equation). What Pakistan is today, the depths it has plumbed, the failures courted, the follies assiduously pursued, have been the handiwork of its English-speaking elite classes – who wouldn’t be caught dead calling themselves secular but who, for all practical purposes, represent a secularist point of view. Egypt to Execute Muslim in Killings Christians- Justice to Prevail: A Muslim men was awaiting execution Monday, January 17, after a court in Egypt sentenced him to death for his alleged involvement in the January 2010 killings of six Coptic Christians following Christmas mass. A Muslim policeman also died when three gunmen in a car attacked worshipers emerging from mass with bullets in Nagaa Hammadi, near the southern town of Qena.
